Descripton

        A gabion is a type of wired basket filled with various rocks or soil that helps prevent erosion, retain a slope, or provide a landscape element. They are commonly used in streambanks and areas with steep slopes. 

        Gabion Basket are wire mesh boxes, containers or baskets filled with rock to prevent soil erosion and to retain/contain soil particles. Flat Gabions, called River , are widely used in river courses where soil erosion is a problem over a large flat or sloped area in need of protection against soil loss or scour.

        They are used mostly in the civil engineering industry, especially in the construction of roadway drainage structures. Recently however, due to the environmental benefits associated with gabions, they are being used in many various applications and industries.

Features

         Their flexibility and drainage capacity, which minimises the risk of landslides in ground that contains a high proportion of silt and clay, and is rich in water, permitting the discharge of the water and the simultaneous containment of the ground.

         Solidarity and resistance. The electrowelded mesh makes gabion baskets perfect for giving structure to elevated and self-supporting structures. Furthermore, they are not subject to deformation, thus reducing problems caused by discrepancies between the ground and natural walls.

         High capacity for the absorption of mechanical stress.

Mesh Size: Typically 8x10 mesh for gabion baskets and 6x8 mesh for mattresses.  
Wire Diameter: Common diameters are 2.7mm for fabric and 3.4mm for selvedge wire. For architectural uses or where vandalism is a concern, 4mm wire may be used.  
Rock Size: Minimum rock size is often 100mm for gabions and 75mm for mattresses. The maximum rock size should be two-thirds of the mattress thickness or 250mm, whichever is less.  
Corrosion Protection: Gabions are often galvanised or PVC coated to prevent corrosion.  
Tensile Strength: Wire used in gabion baskets has a tensile strength typically between 350-500N/mm².  
Basket Dimensions: Standard sizes vary, but common dimensions include 2x1x0.3m, 3x1x0.3m, 2x1x0.5m, 3x1x0.5m, 4x1x0.5m, 2x1x1m, 3x1x1m, and 4x1x1m.  
Construction: Gabions are typically constructed into excavated trenches, with a footing of compacted aggregate.
